About the village

Netherthong

We are located in the heart of the Holme Valley, named after the river Holme which runs through our beautiful valley. We are a short walk from Holmfirth and just a short drive to the Peak District National Park. There are also hourly buses to Holmfirth and a taxi costs around £5.

“Netherthong”, thought to be named in old English from lower narrow strip of land, is home to the first Wesleyan chapel in the Huddersfield area, opened in 1771. The chapel still exists as a private dwelling on St Mary’s Estate and has been lovingly restored by friends of ours who have uncovered some very interesting gravestones, some of whose descendants still live in the village now!

We have a village school, a church built in 1830, a post box and a village shop. We also have a choice of places to eat and drink, with both pubs, the Clothiers Arms and the Cricketers Arms, serving food. The Clothiers Arms is a friendly pub just around the corner from Weaver’s Den and has its own Bengali Indian restaurant, Sweet Chillies, to which people come from miles around to experience the delicious food and the warm welcome from Athiq in the restaurant and Graeme in the pub.

Across the village, in the direction of Oldfield, you can find the Cricketers Arms which has a large outdoor space. The Cricketers Arms also hosts the famous Crickstock music festival and if you’re here at the right time, the pub might be hosting pop up wood fired pizza or hog roasts. The Pavillion cafe can also be found at the Cricketers Arms for a hearty and delicious Yorkshire breakfast or lunch.

With its awe-inspiring scenery across the Holme Valley, Netherthong is popular with walkers, cyclists and wildlife enthusiasts, as well as being the perfect base for exploring Yorkshire and days out further afield.

Holmfirth & Beyond

In the villages surrounding Weaver’s Den, there is a wide choice of places to eat including the award winning Devour, serving exceptional Italian food. Personally we love the Pickled Pheasant and Jacob’s Well for traditional pub food in a fantastic setting, The Winking Stag for its Japanese menu, delicious cocktails and friendly mixologists, SoDough for wood fired pizza and Mexicali for its fabulous Mexican food.

In the centre of Holmfirth we have several excellent bars for you to explore. Yolande will welcome you at Y-Bar and Snap with her famous Kent dialect and if you are lucky you will receive an “alright darling” as a welcome. The Holmfirth Tavern, Nora, Oscars and Harvey’s serve a delicious range of cocktails. The Nook Brewhouse and the Magic Rock Tap both brew their own real ales and craft beers, with both hosting regular beer festivals.

There is so much to do here in Netherthong and Holmfirth but if you would like to explore more of Yorkshire, we also have some other suggestions and are happy to help you plan an itinerary. Here are some ideas of places you could visit within Yorkshire and the Peak District.
